The Pemento de A Arnoia
The pepper is the product that gives this valley its identity. Green, elongated, thin-skinned and mild in flavour, the Pemento de A Arnoia is protected by a Protected Geographical Indication and is the star of one of Galicia’s great gastronomic festivals.
A Protected Geographical Indication
The production area covered by the «Pemento da Arnoia» IXP spans nearly 23 km²: the municipality of A Arnoia and the parish of Meréns, in the neighbouring municipality of Cortegada, at the confluence of the Miño and Arnoia rivers.
How to recognise it
It is a green, elongated pepper of medium size, with thin skin and a tender texture. Its flavour is mild —it rarely bites— and it is harvested in summer, at the height of the season.
The land behind it
Its character is born of the place: soils of two-mica granite and biotite granodiorite, at an altitude of between 100 and 200 metres, and the water of the rivers. It is this combination of soil, water and climate that makes the A Arnoia pepper taste the way it does.
In the kitchen
The most classic way to enjoy it is fried, with a drizzle of oil and coarse salt. But it is also stuffed, made into an omelette or served alongside meat and fish. During the festival, more than 3.000 kg are served across dozens of recipes.
The Festa do Pemento de A Arnoia
Every first weekend of August, A Arnoia celebrates its biggest festival, declared of Tourist Interest of Galicia. In 2026 it reaches its XLVII edition, from 31 July to 2 August.
